Guest Author Interview: Lori Devoti

Please welcome today's guest author Lori Devoti!  Lori is the author of the Unbound series (Unbound, Guardian's Keep, Wild Hunt, Dark Crusade, The Hellhound King), Amazon series (Amazon Ink, Amazon Queen), Captured, Lured, When Gargoyles Fly, Zombie Moon, Lost: A Vampire Romance, and Demon High.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Lori:
I am not one of those authors who can say I started writing when my fingers were strong enough to hold a pencil and haven't put it down since. I did do some writing, mainly poetry, in high school and took a few very short/half-hearted attempts at novels in my twenties. But I didn't really start writing until I gave up my job and stayed home with my daughter. Then writing became my outlet.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Lori:
I love fantasy. It is probably my main love for reading. Adding paranormal elements to my fiction just made sense.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Lori:
They say if you choose invisibility you are sneaky, but I do have to say it would come in darn handy sometimes. I'd also like to be able to shift into a cat, but a nice well-fed cat who people let into their houses on cold nights.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Lori:
Demon High is a young adult urban fantasy novel. It is on the dark side with a serial killer escaped from hell and a succubus. I don't like to water things down, so while it is a long way from horror in my opinion, the things I think would have happened in the story are in the story. But despite the demons and serial killer it is, like all of my fiction, about the characters. I love my characters and for me they are what books are all about. You need plot, but it is just the road the characters travel. (Oh and right now, I have Demon High on sale for only $.99. Hopefully, readers like that!)

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Lori:
This is terrible, but I have no idea. It isn't how I think. I would love, however, if someone who has read the book would tell me!

Demon High by Lori Devoti.

Lucinda Dent never planned to call demons. She wasn't stupid, after all. She'd seen what the addiction had done to her mother. But her mother has been gone for ten years, sucked into hell by a demon, and all Lucinda has left is her grandmother and the house she grew up in. Who could blame her for using the only thing her mother gave her, a talent for demon calling, to save them? Lucinda teams up with an old friend and together they set up business, calling demons. But soon things go terribly wrong. Demons are loose in Caldera High, and not only is Lucinda responsible, she just might be in love with one of them. Can love conquer all or is Lucinda about to lose everything--her home, her new love, and her soul?Author Note: This is dark urban fantasy which contains curse words and sexual situations. It is not squeaky clean.

Guest Author Interview: Zoe Winters

Please welcome today's guest author Zoe Winters!  Zoe is the author of the Preternaturals series including Blood Lust and Save My Soul.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Zoe:
I don't remember my exact age, but I know for sure I was writing by junior high because I wrote a novel in 8th grade. It was like a Goosebumps/R.L. Stine sort of thing.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Zoe:
Well, in jr. high there was the whole Goosebumps thing, but I didn't get back into paranormal until adulthood. Like many paranormal romance authors, I got hooked on Buffy and her vampire romances.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Zoe:
The power of teleportation because you save on gas money and can go anywhere at any time. Sick? Boom. You're at the doctor's office. Your cousin six states away needs you? Boom. You're there. Want to visit Japan? Well, you get the picture. To me it would be the most useful, time saving, and money saving power to have.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Zoe:
Save my soul has a healthy dose of both snark/humor and angst as well as a very satisfying ending. Actually, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say my own book has a satisfying ending, but it totally does, so I'm saying it anyway.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Zoe:
I actually have no idea who I'd cast in male roles. Though I'd put Eliza Dushku as Anna because she has a great range... great with snark/comedy but also plays the frightened/vulnerable role well. Anna is a bit of both.

Save My Soul (Preternaturals, book 2) by Zoe Winters.

ALL HE'S ASKING FOR IS HER SOUL

After buying the antebellum home she’s fantasized about since childhood, Anna Worthington discovers Luc, a dangerously seductive incubus who has been trapped in the house by a fifty-year-old curse. To rid herself of her problem house guest she’ll call on a priest, gypsies, ghost hunters, and the coven of witches from lust bunny hell. All she has to do is resist him long enough to break the spell so they can go their separate ways. If she doesn’t, she could die. And that would be the best case scenario.

Guest Author Interview: Gretchen McNeil

Please welcome today's guest author Gretchen McNeil!  Gretchen is the author of Possess.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Gretchen:
2007.  I'd never written anything before that.  It was a difficult period in my life and I felt like I needed to do SOMETHING to occupy my mind.  Little did I know that I'd actually like it.  No, love it.  Well, become addicted to it.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Gretchen:
My first novel was chick lit and when I started my second, I only had this image in my head of a girl walking down a road toward an isolated coastal Irish town in the middle of a hellacious storm.  The storm is actually trying to keep her from reaching the town.  The paranormal elements just sort of grew from there.

I love the idea of mixing the fantastical with the mundane, of being able to stretch my imagination but still kept things in the "real world."

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Gretchen:
Invisibility.  This is going to sound super weird, but I'm a spy fiction fan at heart.  I love early 20th century spy fiction like John Buchan and the modern stuff like Clancy and Cussler.  And I've maybe been tinkering around with an historical YA spy adventure manuscript for awhile.  Maybe, just maybe, I've always fantasized about being a spy.  So somehow the idea of controling your visibility is so seductive to me.  I'd be the best spy ever!  ;)

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Gretchen:
POSSESS is much closer to the horror genre than a lot of YA out there right now.  I wanted it to be scary.  Really scary.  There's a doll shop scene about halfway through that really freaked out most of my readers (and made me so proud).  I feel like the "scary" has gone out of traditional horror elements like vampires, werewolves, ghosts and demons, replaced with a more romantic approach.  Which is great, but I love a good scare, and I'm hoping readers do, too!

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Gretchen:
Tough one.  I didn't write most of the characters with any specific actor or actress in mind, though Matt Quinn the love interest is kind of modeled after a young Matt Bomer from WHITE COLLAR.  And Bridget's exorcism mentor Monsignor Renault would be even more awesome if played by Tom Wilkinson.

Possess by Gretchen McNeil.

Fifteen-year-old Bridget Liu just wants to be left alone: by her overprotective mom, by the hunky son of the police officer who got her father killed, and by the eerie voices which she can suddenly and inexplicably hear. Turns out the voices are demons--the Biblical kind, not the Buffy kind--and Bridget possesses the rare ability to banish them.

San Francisco's senior exorcist and his newly assigned partner from the Vatican enlist Bridget's help with increasingly bizarre and dangerous cases of demonic possession. But when one of Bridget's oldest friends turns up dead in a ritualistic sacrifice that mirrors her father's murder, Bridget realizes she can't trust anyone. An interview with her father's murderer reveals a link between Bridget and the Emim: a race of part-demons intent on raising their forefathers to the earth in human form. Now Bridget must unlock the secret to the Emim's plan before someone else close to her winds up dead, or worse--the human vessel for a Demon King.

Guest Author Interview: D.A. Berry

Please welcome today's guest author D.A. Berry!  D.A. is the author of A Deepened Hunger and A Cry From Beyond.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

DA:
I began writing five years ago. I wrote fan-fiction on several web-sites.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

DA:
Since childhood, I’ve loved the paranormal genre.  Staying up late on Saturday evenings watching the Chiller movies will always be one of my favorite memories.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

DA:
That is easy—a vampire of course!  The mystery revolving around their existence is fascinating. They are sexy—adventurous—cunning when the situation requires. And what I love most about this immortal being is their passion and fearlessness. Choosing only one supernatural talent wow—that is quite difficult. I would say possessing the power to transform one’s body into a misty haze. Such a talent would enable one to be anywhere at any time.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

DA:
‘Dark Secrets’ will include two shorter stories. Since the release of my first novel ‘A Deepened Hunger’ my readers relate to the romance between Lucian and Jordan. He, being a vampire that lost all he cared for centuries ago—accepting change throughout, his long existence. She, being a successful modern business woman, whose life was turned upside down, is still capable of holding her own. The combination makes for a fiery relationship. In Dark Secrets Lucian’s beloved wife Jordan will uncover the true mystery behind the death of Isabella. Plagued with the reality of it all, Jordan will be faced with some impossible choices.
The second story revolves around Kara and ‘The Being’ introduced in ‘A Cry From Beyond’ book two in my vampire series. Once again, evil is reaping havoc on New Orleans. And the ancient goddess will stop at nothing to protect the humans and those she cares for. This novel will also bring in play many characters revealed in my weekly blog A Vampire’s Journal.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

DA:
Lucian Monroe~ George Clooney: His ability to adapt to any role and become that character is quite a gift.
Jordan Pierce-Shayne~ Scarlett Johansson: Her character in Iron Man 2 revealed she possesses the persona and ability to portray an immortal Jordan. And she is a stunning natural beauty.
Tristen Sinclair~ Keifer Sutherland: Besides being my favorite male actor. He above all possesses the talent to bring out all the qualities needed to portray this character.
Kara~ Susan Lucie: Strong minded, extremely talented, beautiful… Need I say more…

A Cry From Beyond by D.A. Berry.

Tristen Sinclair has existed for centuries, fighting evil, vowing to protect the one being he loved beyond reason, the woman he pledged his heart to. Centuries passed. As darkness covers the earth, the vampire awakens, consumed with agonizing pain, for he failed to keep his promise. Her death haunts him, ripping apart his soul. For nearly 200 years, the vampire has emotionally battled the beast within, wanting to end his existence, cursing his wife's dying words. "Tristen, you must carry on. Promise me, you will protect the innocent." Her dying words were forever embedded in his mind. Unable to bear her loss any longer, he plans his demise. Awaiting the rising sun, the vampire whispers a prayer, begging her forgiveness. Suddenly, his head begins to throb, a panic-stricken voice invading his thoughts. A shattered mortal woman pleads to be saved from a soulless monster, an ancient vampire believed no longer of this world. Ana Nichols~ At the tender age of seventeen, a monster existing to inflict pain all but destroyed her. The being possessed her soul, ripping apart her inner self, subconsciously tormenting her mind night after night. Overwhelming fear was her only thought once darkness covered the earth. That night, an institution for the mentally ill became Ana's salvation, her home. For 10 years Davis Hospital has kept her hidden from the being, until one cold December night, when once again the creature has found her. Sensing deep within that there is no escape and knowing the monster tormenting her thoughts will not stop until it owns her soul, she mentally cries out, not understanding yet believing the one with emotionless eyes possesses the power to save her. Welcome to their world, the realm of the undead.

Legend of Witchtrot Road: Sneak Peek

Here is a sneak peek from Legend of Witchtrot Road, the third book in the Spirit Guide series by E.J. Stevens.

Legend of Witchtrot Road...

I heard the harsh, grinding creak of a ship’s hull straining against stormy seas just as I felt the vertiginous tilt and roll of the waves beneath me.  I considered letting the motion lull me back to sleep, but one thought kept creeping in to ruin my slumber.   I wasn’t on a boat.
With a jolt I tried to leap upright, but up was down and down was up, causing a searing pain to shoot through my shoulder as I dangled from the car safety belt.  I needed to get a look around, but turning my head didn’t seem like an easy option.  My neck was stiff, like the time I fell asleep with wet hair, and my head was pounding a rhythm that matched the vampire bats gnawing in my stomach.  Come on Yuki, you can do this.
Reaching up to grab the safety belt, I steadied myself and drew in a deep shuddering breath.  It did nothing to calm my racing heartbeat, but the pain in my head momentarily lessened.  Forcing my eyes to stay open, I turned them to my right and flinched.  A ghostly pale face stared back at me and it took a moment for my sluggish brain to realize that the spectral form was only my reflection looking back at me.  I examined the sickly face suspended in the darkness and knew one thing for sure.  I looked like hell.
For a moment I closed my eyes and gathered another steadying breath, remembering to breathe in the way I’d been taught during the numerous yoga classes that Cal had dragged me to over the years.   Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of why I was hanging upside down from a car safety belt, I pulled my eyes to the left.  A golden amorphous shape hung glowing beside me and I nearly jumped when it moaned.
“Emma?” I asked.  My voice was dry and raspy and started a series of painful coughs that nearly made me pass out again.
Emma didn’t answer me, but with a rush of memory I knew that it was my friend beside me.  Emma’s blond hair cascaded past her face to dangle above the glowing instrument panel.  Pale skin, golden hair, and white blouse sleeve were marred only by a dark stream that trickled from her scalp along her arm to drip slowly, tap tap tap, off her fingers onto the windshield.
How did we get here?  It had to be the curse.  I clenched my fist in frustration as my eyes filled with tears.  We had known better.  Emma with her research and me with my psychic gift to sense the dead; we knew the risks of messing with the curse, but that hadn’t stopped us.  Our curiosity had won out over common sense and now we were paying the price.  Son of a dung beetle.  I just hoped we survived long enough to benefit from the lesson learned.  Never mess with a curse and never, ever travel on Witchtrot Road.

Book Review: Night of the Loving Dead

Night of the Loving Dead (Pepper Martin, book 4) by Casey Daniels.

Introducing sleuth Pepper Martin...And now, in her fourth hip, quirky mystery, she's all ours.  Pepper Martin, heiress-turned-cemetery- tour-guide, often has her hands full with two hotties and the ghosts who won't let her rest or work, or shop in peace.  Now the specter of a young woman in a lab coat wants Pepper's help. Before the woman died, she worked with a sexy, mysterious doctor who coincidentally once saved Pepper's life and who the woman claims is now in danger. But Pepper doesn't know that there's more to the story, including a devious doctor and an obsessive, crazy love.

Looking for a fashion-conscious detective to the dead?  Pepper Martin is a fun, spunky character with a penchant for getting in way over her curly red tresses.  Night of the Loving Dead is the fourth book in the Pepper Martin series, a book I grabbed from the bargain bin, and it was such a fun read that I'll be going back to check out the other books in this series.  Pepper can speak with the dead and uses her gift to solve mysteries for the ghosts she encounters.  Since she's not dead herself, she tends to get a bit distracted by the hot men she attracts with her good looks and unique style.  Who said you can't wear stiletto boots and a mini skirt to a cemetery...during a snowstorm?  A lighthearted blend of mystery, supernatural suspense, and paranormal romance.

I recommend Night of the Loving Dead (Pepper Martin, book 4) to readers of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, paranormal suspense, and especially to fans of paranormal mysteries.  Night of the Loving Dead may appeal to fans of the Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine and the Cassandra Palmer series by Karen Chance.

Sensitive reader warning: mild violence, sexual situations.

Guest Author Interview: Brindle Chase

Please welcome today's guest author Brindle Chase!  Brindle is the author of That One Night In Vegas, Gothic City Lights, Diva-licious, My Snow White, and The Grass Is Always Greener.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Brindle:
I started a novel about 20 years ago for a creative writing class in college. An epic fantasy, if I recall. Never finished it. Then about 10 years ago, started another one, a paranormal, didn't finish. Then when I turned 40 (4 years ago) I decided, screw it. I love to write but always let real life get in the way. For christmas, I went out and bought me a laptop and started writing every day on my lunch break at work. I started with re-writing that paranormal I started way back when. I Finished it a year later. Sent it off to 60 agents. All rejected me. *sniffle* But I knew then, I had more to learn about writing. So I hit the author forums and found out many of my mistakes. My muse fed me the premise for Gothic City Lights 2 years ago, so I took that on next. It was to prove to myself I was publishable. To exercise what I had learned from other authors and a year later, it was finished. I sent it off to 30-35 agents. Got several nibbles, but ultimately no offers. My test readers were established writers, so I trusted in them and tried this time with publishers. I sent it to 4 publishers and received 1 request for more, 2 rejections and 1 offer. I took the offer and Loose Id published Gothic City Lights this last June! Yeah!!! Oh, um, so the answer is, for real? About 4 years ago.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Brindle:
This is going to sound very geeky. I was playing Vampire: the Masquerade, Live Action version with a group of players that met on weekends to role play our vampire characters. The storyline I used for that character, was the foundation for the paranormal story I rewrote (and plan to rewrite again soon)

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Brindle:
This is hard. Up front, my pick leans heavily towards being a vampire. But it would depend on which kind. I'm not a fan of bloodbank or small animal feeding, sparkling in sunlight, wussy vampires. I would be more like Lestat, but less sinister and callous. I would prey on two types of victims. Beautiful women (to sate my own desires, obviously. I never claimed to be a gentleman *lol*), but I would not drain them or cause them death. And then for hunting, I would seek out the worst of humans. The most evil, greedy and selfish, drain them until death claimed them. Depending on their crimes, I might torture them instead, force them to provide me finances and make serious amend to the world they have corrupted/blighted…. Etc… Basically a vigilante vampire. Hehehe.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Brindle:
My upcoming release, Trading Up, is a touching contemporary erotic romance. Its about two sisters, one dating a great guy, but she doesn’t really love him. He's fun at the moment. The other sister is head over heels in love with her sister's boyfriend. When the two sisters discover this, they plot a switch in the dark, one giving over the guy to her sister, when they realize he is Mr. Right, but for the other. Readers will enjoy the sexy eroticism of the switch. But the emotional depth, the vulnerabilities all the characters reveal and deal with, is very touching. Its not erotica… definitely a sweet, but extremely sexy romance! It releases in march 2011 from Breathless Press.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Brindle:
My paranormal erotic romance would definitely end up as a porn, or at least a Cinemax or HBO movie. Gothic City Lights is a very erotic paranormal romance. Very. Lilith is the heroine and she is a drop dead gorgeous succubus, a real bombshell. Casting her would be difficult. She's half Chinese as well, limiting it further. I think a young Kelly Hu maybe? And Gabriel is a buff, strikingly handsome angel. I see him sort of a young prettier and buffer Russell Crowe, with longer hair, maybe? Why? These selections are based on how I see the characters looks. Not sure if they could pull off the personalities, but hey, they are actors, right? Hehehe.

Gothic City Lights by Brindle Chase.

It was just a fling. Lilith Templeton had no clue he was a human agent working for the angels. No big deal, but she got caught and Mother Superior, Portland’s most powerful angel, wants penance. Or death, Lilith’s choice. Being a lowly half-demon and therefore not a participant in the never-ending war for souls, she knows it's insane to cross the full-blood demons like Mother Superior wants. But opting out isn't an option: do or die. For additional penance, she's paired with an angel who not only ignites her lust but something more. Lilith wants to fall in love, to know what it was like to share herself with just one man. Yet since succubi needed to stay sexually satisfied, falling in love with the angel of chastity is a mistake she can’t afford.

Gabriel would have never second-guessed his choice to ascend through the virtue of chastity. Until he meets Lilith. Now, his ascension would be forfeit if he cannot vanquish his need for her. Having no choice but to ignore the fire burning inside them, they work towards tempting the demon cult’s human leader into revealing the hideout. Lilith, sexually irresistible half-succubus, is the perfect bait. Get in, send the signal and wait for the angel to rescue her. Oh and not get killed, or tempt the angel. Simple, right?

Book Review: Black Wings

Black Wings (Madeline Black, book 1) by Christine Henry.

As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It's a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.  Maddy's position may come with magical powers and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn't pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.  Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy's building. It's probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos.  Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell...

What happens when a virginal agent of death and a smoking hot angel team up against a new deadly foe?  Black Wings is a wonderful mesh of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.  I have to admit that Madeline "Maddy" Black wasn't my favorite character, but the supporting characters really shine and I hope to read more of Beezle and Gabriel in the future.  Beezle, Maddy's gargoyle guardian, is adorable and adds comic relief to a story that is often dark and violent.  Black Wings is an action packed urban fantasy with a sizzle of paranormal romance that will appeal to both UF and PNR fans.  I'm curious to learn more about the Agents of Death, and how Madeline's responsibilities play out, in the second book in the Madeline Black series.

I recommend Black Wings (Madeline Black, book 1) to readers of paranormal romance, paranormal suspense, and especially to fans of urban fantasy.  Black Wings may appeal to fans of Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Rob Thurman, and Daniel Arenson.

Sensitive reader warning: contains violence and adult situations.

Guest Author Interview: Eve Langlais

Please welcome today's guest author Eve Langlais!  Eve is the author of Lucifer's Daughter, Alien Mate, Alien Mate 2, Apocalypse Cowboy, Take a Chance, My Secretary My Mistress, The Hunter, and upcoming releases Broomstick Breakdown, and A Ghostly Menage.

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Eve:
I first sat down to write in February of 2009. I was tired of reading stories that went in directions I hated. My husband dared me to do better and I hate it when he wins. Eighteen months and several published works later, I think I can safely say I won the dare LOL.

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Eve:
Paranormal stories rock because you can create whatever kind of world you want, even one where demons are romantic heroes and vampires simply misunderstood people with special dietary needs. With the paranormal, I can create a whole new race of beings or an underworld to our modern one. The possibilities are only limited by my imagination.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Eve:
That is such a tough question because each has pros and cons. I think, if I had to choose right now, I'd like to be a shapeshifter, a feline one. The idea of having more than human strength and senses, super healing power along with the ability to run wild sounds awesome. I just wouldn't want to birth a litter lol.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Eve:
Readers will love Lucifer's Daughter because it is an absolutely fun read. In this story, Heaven and Hell are redefined, and the people who would normally be evil, are instead the characters you fall in love with. It's the first in a series of three stories. Part two, titled Snowballs in Hell, is coming out sometime in the next few months.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Eve:   Well the hero role in Lucifer's Daughter would definitely have to go to Ian Somerhalder from Vampire Diaries. He's got that dark dangerous look--and sexy smirk--that I picture for Auric, Muriel's love interest. As for Muriel, we'd need someone like Buffy,a demon ass kicking girly-girl. Who she is doesn't matter, because honestly, our eyes would be riveted on Ian. LOL.

Lucifer's Daughter by Eve Langlais.

Hi, I’m Muriel, the only white sheep in a sea of black ones, and a virgin to boot. I am determined to wait for love, but my dad, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. I’m hoping the hunk that I met in my bar will turn out to be the one–just looking at him makes my insides melt like marshmallows over the coals of hell, but trusting is hard when it seems everyone I get close to ends up trying to kill me.

Not only am I dealing with an extreme case of lust, there’s a new threat in hell, one my dad says to ignore. Something easier said than done since it seems everywhere I turn demons are trying to kill me. But I’m okay with that, because one thing I’ve learned being a princess of hell is that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around a bit.

A rebellion in hell, demon assassins and scorching kisses, could my life get any more interesting?
