Book Review: Paranormalcy

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, book 1) by Kiersten White.

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal. Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. So much for normal.

Evie may have the ability to see through the glamours that shroud most paranormals, but will she be able to see through the lies and misdirection in time to save herself?  Paranormalcy is the fabulous beginning to a new urban fantasy series.  I wasn't sure, initially, if I would like such a pink-obsessed heroine, but quickly came to enjoy Evie's character.  Evie is the perfect YA combination of awkward teen insecurities and butt kicking courage.  She is balanced on the razor's edge of childhood and adulthood, paranormal and human.  Paranormalcy is a wonderful young adult urban fantasy read.  Filled with vampires, fairies, and werewolves, plenty of action, romance, and loads of witty dialogue Paranormalcy has something for everyone.

I highly recommend Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, book 1) to readers of young adult, paranormal romance, fantasy, and especially to fans of urban fantasy.

Teaser Tuesdays: Paranormalcy

"I sighed.  I hate the vamp jobs.  They think they're so suave.  It's not enough for them to slaughter and eat you like a zombie would.  No, they want it to be all sexy, too.  And, trust me: vampires?  Not. Sexy."

p.g 2, Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.

Paranormalcy is the first book in the Paranormalcy series by Kiersten White.  I was unsure if I could like a character who is so pink obsessed, but the humor and overall plot really grabbed me.  I cheated a bit and included more than two sentences in my teaser this week, but wanted to give a feel for Evie's personality and the paranormal world in which she lives.

This passage brings up an interesting question:  If you could see the shriveled corpse beneath the glamour, would you still find vampires sexy?

p.s.  Now that BlogFest is over I'll be returning to my regular review schedule, so look for reviews of The Iron Daughter and Paranormalcy later this week.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

On My Wishlist (5/8)

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Sixteen-year-old Evie's job is bagging and tagging paranormals. Possessing the strange ability to see through their glamours, she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. But when someone--or something--starts taking out the vamps, werewolves, and other odd beasties she's worked hard to help become productive members of society, she's got to figure it out before they all disappear and the world becomes utterly normal.

Normal is so overrated.

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone—but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he'd ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.
Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who'd always terrified her—but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she'd ever imagined.

The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

A serial killer on the loose. A girl with a morbid ability. And the boy who would never let anything happen to her.

Violet Ambrose can find the dead. Or at least, those who have been murdered. She can sense the echoes they leave behind... and the imprints they leave on their killers. As if that weren't enough to deal with during junior year, she also has a sudden, inexplicable, and consuming crush on her best friend since childhood, Jay Heaton. Now a serial killer has begun terrorizing Violet's small town... and she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Ever see a book cover and just have to own a book?  That's the compulsion I felt the first time I looked at the unveiling of Paranormalcy.  Plus, the main character works for an organization called International Paranormal Containment Agency.  How can I resist?  I'm also pushing Fragile Eternity (Wicked Lovely, #3) up on my wishlist since I've read Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange and am enjoying the interplay of faeries and humans.  I can't wait to discover what lays within the pages of Fragile Eternity! I've also been reading fabulous reviews for The Body Finder and am anxiously awaiting my copy.  I am definitely in the mood for this chilling novel.
